What is a CTP Green Slip?
A greenslip is an insurance policy, which provides cover for compulsory third-party (CTP) personal injury insurance.
CTP insurance provides compensation for other people injured in an accident when you or the person driving your vehicle is the driver at fault.

Australia wide, 24 hours a day, your CTP insurance covers:

  1. your passengers
  2. other road users, such as drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, motor cyclists and pillion passengers
  3. injuries caused through the use of a trailer

It does not cover:

you for personal injury if you are the driver at fault in an accident damage to property or other vehicles CTP Insurance is compulsory, and must be taken out when registering a motor vehicle.

Wherever you live in New South Wales, your greenslip will only cover your vehicle if it is registered. If it is not registered you are personally liable for any injuries you cause in a motor vehicle accident.

What is the special children’s benefit?
From 1 October 2006, the greenslip scheme includes a special children’s benefit. This means that all children injured in car accidents in NSW receive the necessary treatment, rehabilitation and care to assist in their recovery, regardless of who was at fault.

Why change the existing greenslip scheme?
The current greenslip scheme is fault based. This means that to make a claim, a child must prove they were injured by the fault of the driver. If the driver is not at fault, the parents are left to pay for all treatment, care and rehabilitation costs.

Who benefits from the greenslip changes?
Children are unpredictable. They move quickly without thinking of the potential risks, and can be injured in motor vehicle accidents with the driver having no chance of avoiding a collision.

The expanded greenslip scheme gives families peace of mind, because now, all children up to 16 years get the necessary treatment, rehabilitation and care for their recovery, irrespective of who was at fault.

If a child is seriously injured leading to paraplegia, quadriplegia and/or a traumatic brain injury, they receive medical care and support for the rest of their life. This includes help with daily nursing care, upgrading wheelchairs as the child grows, and support so they can go to school.

CTP greenslips increase slightly from 1 October 2006, to cover the cost of this special children’s benefit. Greenslips show a separate levy which covers the cost of all ambulance and hospital costs for all motor vehicle accidents (previously included in the premium), and for treatment, care and support for children with very serious injuries who need life time assistance.
